Now that the tree is up, the shopping is done, (most of) the presents are wrapped, and the cards are ordered, I thought I would pull out some of my Christmas movies and start watching them. My all time favorite movie is It’s a Wonderful Life. I saw it for the first time when I was 15. It was a cold Sunday afternoon and my dad asked if I wanted to watch it with him. I really didn’t want to sit through a black and white film that my dad picked, but I had nothing else planned that day. He said I would love it and he was right. Last year, I made my kids watch it with me. They complained about the black and white, too, but after awhile, they forgot about the lack of color and enjoyed the story.

Other black and white movies on my list:
A Christmas Carol (some of the color versions are good, too)
Miracle on 34th Street – I have tried to watch this movie with my husband every Christmas Eve for years. He usually falls asleep before the parade is over!

Believe it or not, I have yet to see these other Christmas classics:
The Bell’s Of St. Mary’s
The Bishop’s Wife
White Christmas
Holiday Inn
Christmas in Connecticut

But they are on my list for the next few weeks!

Like the black and white films, these children’s classics are timeless. Every year my kids get so excited when they come on TV and we all watch them as a family. My favorite is The Year Without a Santa Claus. It is the one where Santa tries to take the year off. As a mom, I can sort of relate! Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas is a close second favorite. Some of the other children’s classics that I love include:

A Charlie Brown Christmas
Little Drummer Boy
Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer
Santa Claus is Coming to Town
Frosty the Snowman
Nestor the Long-eared Christmas Donkey

Many of these other family Christmas movies are played on TBS, TNT and other cable stations throughout December. I have already watched my favorite, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation over the weekend.

Lastly, I love those movies that take place during Christmas, but are far from classics. While I was writing this blog, I could only think of one – Family Man, which is another movie I watch during the holiday season every year. I went on a few websites like this one that listed many more. Take some time to check them out.

Did I miss any?
